The Fells' Trails Are Having Their Best Month Of The Year

Walk the Reservoir Trail toward the Sheepfold this week and a couple of things register almost without you noticing. The culvert crossing at Hillcrest Parkway, cleared by a trail crew back in April, isn't holding water anymore. Along Greenwood Park's playground edge, the buckthorn that crowded the tree line into November is simply gone. None of this is luck or an unusually dry August. It is the tail end of a six-month volunteer effort that is about to hand off to a fall calendar dense enough to justify the timing.

The Middlesex Fells Reservation spans roughly 2,575 acres across Malden, Medford, Melrose, Stoneham and Winchester, according to the Department of Conservation and Recreation, though other counts put the figure closer to 2,200 acres. Either way, it is a lot of ground for one nonprofit and a rotating cast of volunteers to keep walkable. What's happening right now is the reason it still is.

Where the quiet came from

Since the snow melted in March, Friends of the Fells has run a Trail Adopter program that assigns volunteers to specific sections of the reservation and asks them to report what they see. This year that produced more than 1,200 individual reports on downed trees, erosion, missing blazes, trash and trail usage. That data drove the actual repair work. A crew leader named Charlie led 59 volunteers through culvert repairs, waterway fixes and trail improvements since the thaw, including a April project that cleared a blocked culvert at Hillcrest Parkway. Three of those events were open to the public. A fourth brought in Team Rubicon to tackle drainage problems at Greenwood Park.

The invasive plant removal ran on a parallel track. Volunteers pulled buckthorn, bittersweet and porcelain berry vines from Greenwood Park and the shoreline of Spot Pond straight through the winter, including a January session where 22 volunteers worked the cold to clear vines along the pond. In November, a group from SEEM Collaborative took on a stand of mature buckthorn crowding the field and playground at Greenwood Park, and DCR crews hauled away what they uprooted so the area stayed clear for families using it. Come March, the Tufts Leonard Carmichael Society sent ten volunteers to start on the bittersweet tangled along Greenwood Park's edges, on top of a separate cleanup that pulled two 72-gallon trash bags and a bag of recycling from around Flynn Rink and Quarter Mile Pond. Corporate groups from Liberty Mutual and Triangle also logged hours this spring.

None of this shows up on a trail map. It shows up as the absence of the things that normally slow a hike down.

The Fells has been fighting invaders since 1869

The porcelain berry and bittersweet crews are working a fight that is older than most of the houses around the reservation. In 1869, a gypsy moth escaped from a home in Medford, and within a few decades the Fells had become one of the first battlegrounds in the country against an invasive insect that threatened to strip the forest bare. Medford's first mayor, General Samuel Lawrence, organized a private force to fight the infestation directly, using methods that ranged from clever to genuinely strange. The forest came close to being lost outright.

That history matters because it reframes what looks like routine yard work into something closer to a long-running institutional habit. The Fells has never been a set-it-and-forget-it park. It has always required someone paying close attention to what's trying to take over, whether that's an insect in 1869 or a vine in 2026.

East Fells and West Fells are not the same park

Interstate 93 splits the reservation into two halves, and the rules are not identical on each side. Knowing which half you're headed to changes what you should expect.

Trailforks flags one mistake directly: the Skyline Trail is strictly off-limits to bikes except where it overlaps with the Reservoir and Green routes, a distinction that's easy to miss without checking the DCR map before you park.

The one place dogs can actually run free

Most of the reservation requires leashes, which surprises some visitors given how many off-leash dogs turn up on the Reservoir Trail on a given Saturday. Sheepfold Meadow, the 10-acre open field in Stoneham, is the exception DCR has designated specifically for that purpose. It is also one of the few flat, open stretches in a park that is otherwise defined by rock outcrops and root systems, which makes it a natural gathering point for dog walkers regardless of the leash question.

The next six weeks, if you want to catch it

The volunteer push and the fall program calendar overlap for about six weeks, which is the actual window worth planning around.

Saturday, August 22. Friends of the Fells runs a Late Summer Guided Nature Walk at Greenwood Park starting at 9:15 a.m., the same morning Stoneham hosts its Festival of Faith and Fun on the Town Common.
Saturday, August 29. Stoneham's Porchfest brings a set from local act Shadows on the Mountain to 5 Oak St, part of the same late-August run of neighborhood programming that clusters around the reservation's edge towns.
Saturday, September 26. Fall Forest Explorations kicks off at Alta Clara at The Fells in Stoneham at 9:30 a.m., the point where the summer nature-walk series formally hands off to fall programming.
Ongoing. Queer and Trans Hiking Fell-ows meets the last Sunday of every month, and the Women+'s trail running series and weekend trail run club continue their regular schedule.

That stretch from late August into late September is when trail conditions from the spring and summer volunteer work are still holding, before fall leaf drop and the first real storms start generating new downed limbs and washed-out sections for next year's Trail Adopters to log.

Getting there without a car

The Fells is genuinely reachable by transit, which is easy to forget given how wooded it feels once you're inside. The Oak Grove stop on the Orange Line is about a 15-minute walk from the eastern side. For the western entrances, take the Orange Line to Wellington Station and board the MBTA's Bus 100 to Roosevelt Circle Rotary, then walk south and turn right on South Border Road to reach the Bellevue Pond entrance about two-tenths of a mile up. Bus 99 runs 42 round trips daily between Wellington Station, Malden Center and Malden Medical, ending at 3 Woodland Road in Stoneham, right across from the Botume House Visitor Center. Bus 132 connects Malden Center to the Redstone Shopping Center via Wyoming and Pond Street, stopping at the Stone Zoo and Greenwood Park along the way.

The reservation asks nothing of the people who use it, but it clearly asks a great deal of the volunteers who keep it usable. That is worth knowing the next time a trail feels a little clearer than it should.
